Pain-2-Power Person of the Week: A Hero Named Jonathan Bauer
Jonathan Bauer did what apparently comes naturally to him on May 9 when his car was one of those involved in a multi-car pileup on an overpass in Ocean City, Maryland. He lept off a bridge to rescue a 2-year-old toddler thrown from another vehicle and saved her life.
The little girl Bauer saved had been a passenger in a car that was pushed onto its side, atop a row of Jersey barriers at the edge of the overpass. She tumbled out of the car and fell 25 feet into the water. When Bauer reached her she was about to be lost under the waters of the Assawoman Bay. He had the presence of mind to slap her, hard, between her shoulder blades, at which point she coughed up a large amount of water and began to breathe.
Bauer handed the little girl off to boaters who had watched his heroic act and then conveyed the little girl to a local hospital where she was treated.
According to the New York Post and WJLA television, Bauer’s wife Wendy had this to say about the events, “I can’t say how proud I am of him. It doesn’t surprise me. If you know him, that is something he would do.”
It seems to me that if you live your life powerfully, without avoiding pain, you might be lucky enough to have someone say something similar about you—that heroism is consistent with who you are as a man or a woman.
Jonathan Bauer has not only provided a sterling example of quick thinking and courage, he has saved a human being who will make her own contributions to this world. It would be wonderful to learn what those turn out to be, so that we can all see what one bold, instinctive act, by a man whose character is such that leaping 25 feet into the water to save someone is a reflex, can deliver to this world. Just imagine what others like Bauer can achieve—by acting for others, without a second thought. And imagine the power that you yourself have.
Jonathan Bauer has been referred to as a “humble hero.” I’m humbled to even have the opportunity to write about him.
