FISETIN: A POTENTIAL NATURAL TREATMENT FOR DEPRESSION

Over half of those who suffer with depression do not respond adequately to medications [https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK261988/].  In addition, many others suffer side effects from antidepressants, including weight gain, sleep problems or sexual dysfunction.  For this reason, vitamins and other supplements that have antidepressant activity are becoming more and more important.  One such supplement is fisetin.

Fiseten is a potent anti-inflammatory molecule found naturally in strawberries.  It is one of a group of molecules known as polyphenols (another of which is resveratrol, which is found in red wine).  In addition to having been shown to extend longevity in some species, fisetin has also been shown to increase mood in laboratory animals. [https://www.hindawi.com/journals/omcl/2017/5762172/].

Since fisetin is not toxic to animals, even at many times its antidepressant dosage, lots of people are beginning to use it to battle depression.

Other naturally-occurring anti-inflammatory substances are known to be effective antidepressants.  Curcumin (yet another polyphenol), for instance, which is derived from the spice turmeric, has been shown to be as effective in relieving depression as Prozac [https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23832433].

Fisetin seems to work not only by reducing inflammation, but by increasing the activity of serotonin and norepinephrine, just the way that traditional antidepressants do.  For those who have not benefited from medications or who have been unable to take them due to severe side effects, discussing the use of fisetin with their physicians seems to make sense.

Here is a list of supplements to consider for low mood and depression:

  • Curcumin
  • Fisetin
  • Resveratrol
  • DHEA
  • Lavender oil capsules (for anxiety associated with depression)

This is an incomplete list.  A bold, new frontier has opened in using supplements to increase mood, reduce anxiety, increase energy and increase focus.

Of course, before adding or changing any supplement or medicine being used to target depression or any other symptom, please consult with your health care provider.
